The Story Behind the Course
The idea for this course emerged from conversations between myself and my mentor, Rael Isacowitz. I am deeply grateful for his guidance and unwavering support in developing this educational program. Together, we recognized a critical need in our Pilates community: instructors were increasingly encountering clients with injuries and medical conditions, yet many felt unprepared to work with this population safely and effectively.
These courses represent the culmination of over 25 years of experience as both a physical therapist and Pilates instructor, specializing in the integration of Pilates into patient rehabilitation. Through clinical practice and research, I've witnessed firsthand how Pilates, when used appropriately, becomes a highly effective therapeutic tool, helping patients recover from injuries and surgery while optimizing function for those with chronic conditions.
Addressing a Real Need
Over the years, countless Pilates professionals have shared with me their frustration: lacking medical backgrounds, they often feel uncertain when working with injured clients. They yearn for practical explanations and exercise suggestions for working with this population. My mission is simple: to empower Pilates teachers with the tools they need to help clients move better, function free of pain, and enjoy efficient movement.
Part 1: Orthopedic Foundations (3-Day Course)
This comprehensive course systematically covers commonly encountered orthopedic injuries and pathologies in each region of the body:
Cervical and Lumbar Spine: disc pathologies, sciatica, osteoarthritis, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, postural syndrome, whiplash, thoracic outlet syndrome, and osteoporosis.
Shoulder: impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tear, tendinopathy, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), shoulder instability.
Hip: osteoarthritis, total hip replacement, greater trochanteric pain syndrome (bursitis and gluteal tendinopathies or tears), piriformis syndrome, labral tear.
Knee: osteoarthritis, total knee replacement, ACL tears and reconstruction, meniscal injuries, patellofemoral pain syndrome, patellar tendinopathies, and iliotibial band syndrome.
Ankle & Foot: ankle sprain, Achilles tendinopathy, medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), and plantar fasciitis.
While we discuss definitions, causes, contributing factors, and symptoms of each condition, the focus remains on practical application—how we, as Pilates professionals, can contribute to our clients' wellbeing by correctly selecting exercises and, equally important, knowing when to avoid certain exercises and ranges of motion.
This course is approved for 18 PMA/NPCP CEUs

Part 2: Neurological Conditions & Chronic Pain (2-Day Course)
Exciting news! Our newest offering builds upon the foundation of Part 1 while standing as a complete course on its own. Part 2 addresses the following neurological conditions and chronic pain syndromes:
Fibromyalgia
Lupus
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Multiple Sclerosis
Parkinson's Disease
Stroke
As Pilates instructors, we cannot diagnose injuries or pathologies, but we can learn to work effectively with diagnosed conditions. This course empowers you to safely teach what you know best: how to move effectively and efficiently, thereby helping clients improve their quality of life despite their health challenges.
Following the same practical format as Part 1, you'll learn how these conditions differ, their contributing factors, signs and symptoms, and general precautions. Most importantly, you'll discover specific Pilates applications—when and how to structure sessions, along with targeted exercises and modifications backed by the latest research. Designed for Pilates instructors seeking to broaden their expertise, this course offers invaluable insights into working with clients facing complex health challenges.

What You'll Gain from these courses:
Part 1: 18 PMA/NPCP CECs
Part 2: 12 PMA/NPCP CEUs
Beyond continuing education credits, you'll gain the confidence to work with diverse populations—from young athletes recovering from ACL surgery, to middle-aged women with osteoporosis, to 90-year-olds with hip replacements, and even people with complicated disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. You'll know exactly which exercises to choose and why. If you've ever wanted to collaborate with doctors, physical therapists, or chiropractors in sports medicine or rehabilitation environments, this course provides the essential background knowledge to make those professional relationships possible.
Scope of Practice Clarity
Let me be clear: it's never my intention to convert Pilates instructors into physical therapists or encourage anyone to function outside their scope of practice. However, there are common conditions you'll inevitably encounter as a Pilates teacher. Understanding these conditions—knowing what you can do to help and, critically, what not to do to avoid exacerbation—is essential professional knowledge.
My Promise to You
After completing these courses, you'll no longer feel intimidated working with clients who have injuries or medical conditions. You'll possess all the tools and confidence needed to help your clients feel better every time they leave your studio. That's not just my goal—it's my promise.
BASI remains committed to preparing teachers of the highest caliber who can perpetuate and preserve the gift of Pilates. These courses represent that commitment in action, bridging the gap between movement instruction and therapeutic application.
